Sites that bite: The Entertainment Niche
If you are looking for an idea for building your own website then you should read this.
Before I started building websites I was always confused on the niche that I should join. I had no particular topic expertise and it was a little mind draining, where I spent hours trying to figure out the best niche for me.
Almost a year in web development and a handful sites in my portfolio, I can conclude with confidence when I say that the entertainment niche is the one for you if you too are facing the same dilemma.
I would not say that you don’t need brains to manage an entertainment site, but you will definitely be at ease in terms of content creation and traffic generations.
The basic things that I have observed and you would agree too is that the audience of an entertainment sites is comparatively easy to please and also the content that would hold their interest is easy to create.

Easy to please: You will have to agree that majority of the people online are casual browsers who come online for the sole purpose of seeking a source of entertainment or information (I would be save to assume that the ones who seek entertainment are more). So when you build a site that gives some kind of fun, you succeed in fulfilling that need.
These kinds of visitors are low on expectation and are happy as long as they get something interesting. These visitors will not critic your design or you website layout nor will they be bugging you for any kind of support and will even not mind if you make a obnoxiously stupid post. These visitors keep coming back for more.
Easy content creation: Before we discuss this, we will first see what kinds of sites can be built under this niche.
In the entertainment niche you can create a gaming arcade, a funny video blog, may be a photo blog or even a blog with daily interesting links.
At the moment I am making a few new sites in this niche, an anime episode vlog (video blog) and a new arcade.
Now, creating content is just about installing a script and visiting a few bookmarking sites for content (p.s.remember to give credit to the original author).
You can have a working arcade in just minutes, with more than a thousand games and finding new content is as easy as that.
If you are building a video blog, all you would have to do is visit a few video sites and post a few of their top rated videos in your site and for a celebrity gossip blog you can scan the various news portal for the latest in celebrity gossip.
Easy Traffic: We have to be thankful to social bookmarking sites, which have garnered a revolution in free targetted traffic. I have had days when StumbleUpon has sent me quarter of a million visitors and imagine if one had to pay for that.
In most of the social bookmarking sites (barring Digg), the entertainment niche is the hottest among network members and this works out to be a very good topic for being shared.
Once your site is exposed to such networks, by creating content at regular intervals you will get enough returning visitors.
I have managed to build a steady direct traffic of atleast 1k a day via these networks.
And with traffic, comes money.
Just note a point here. Nowadays it has become a trend, wherein, webmasters are focusing on short term traffic gains focused on revenue generation rather than increasing and sustaining the readership. If you are looking at long term gains then remember to use your social media resources well.
Example of useless tactics: Massively stumbling an average post cluttered with ads.
Outcome: The first impression could well be the last impression
Closing this post with a few pointers:
1. If you can think a little different within the niche then you could GAIN BIG.
Some sites that are doing extremely well and also my favorites: FlickrBabes, Stuff on my cat, etc.
2. Traffic monetization is easier with comparatively more ad click as this kind of audience will click anything that looks clickable attractive.
3. Try to keep quality an avoid the mistake of making a useless post in desperation of updating. An audience will always appreciate fewer but quality content.
4. Same bottle but with filtered wine. I will use an example to explain this better. One of my arcade site is a major player as against my other arcade sites. This being the case even though the lesser popular sites have more choices of games to play.
When building my popular arcade sites, I used the same game pack as my previous sites but instead of the 1200+ games, I filtered (actually played them all) for the best and ended by with only about 400 games. But that is what made the difference.
5. Use the power of social bookmarking and hit them with your best content. Personally to get traffic I write content specifically keeping the social networking audience in mind.
So if you were confused on building your first site or wanted to expand your portfolio then I hope I was able to convince you on the benefits of joining the entertainment niche.
Hope you enjoyed reading this and now I guess I will get back to working on my sites.
