Different kinds of webservers you can rent
I saw a quite a many threads, where newer webmaster wanted to know the difference between different kinds of server available to them for hosting their websites.
So I just thought of covering that topic in a quick blog post.
When you are looking for a web host, you will come across three option of web servers that you can rent.
This would be a shared, virtual dedicated and a dedicated server.
The kind of server that you choose will depend on the kind of site that you are building.
Let me explain the meaning of each server type to help you understand that further.

A shared server, like the name suggests, is one wherein many sites are hosted on one particular server. And because of this, this is the cheapest available option. You can rent space on a reasonably good shared server starting $3 monthly.
On the other hand, a dedicated server is one wherein only one client (who can have multiple sites) is hosted on the server. As one can not share the maintenance and the rent cost, this server option is comparatively more expensive. Dedicated servers can cost more than $100 a month.
Lastly, a virtual dedicated server is one in which you are sharing the server with other clients but each client within the sever has been assigned a equal fixed quota of space and system resources and so the server usage of one client does not effect the other as they cannot overuse more than what is allotted to them. A virtual dedicated server would cost somewhere in between a shared and a dedicated plan
The difference between a shared server and a virtual dedicated server is that in case of a shared server, the system usage of once client directly effect the other clients on the server as no fixed server usage cap is assigned to the client. This happens because in case of a shared hosting plan, the hosting company is often making a calculated guess that a client would never use all the disk space, bandwidth, etc that he has purchased. And when they do, the server can become overbooked resulting in extreme slowness or even server shutdown.
Hope this cleared all the doubt you had about the various web hosting server types.
If you are just venturing into web development and would like to start a personal blog or a site where you are not expecting much traffic to begin with, then a shared hosting plan is best for you.
Arcade game owners can start with a shared hosting plan and can move over to a virtual or even a full dedicated plan once their site grows beyond the bandwidth provided by the shared hosting plan.
p.s. This blog is hosted on a shared hosting plan for $6.99 a month, so if you want me to upgrade my plan then please keep visiting me.
